Brolga – an Australian journal about dance

Published by Ausdance National twice a year since 1994, Brolga is committed to providing a space for the publication of current research, critical thinking and creative content relating to, and impinging on, dance.

It encompasses an eclectic range of topics including artists talking about cutting edge and emerging practices; documentation and exploration of historical events, performances and people; discussions on dance and education; academic papers about philosophy, composition, criticism, music and costume for dance; reviews of recent dance publications.

Brolga connects the present with a past whose priorities were altogether different. It reminds us – often in poignant detail – of the achievements of people like Laurel Martyn, Gertrud Bodenweiser, Margaret Barr, Edouard Borovansky, and a host of others whose creativity and vision helped carry forward Australian dance.

Brolga encourages its readers to embrace it as a place for discussion, provocation and exchange of ideas. Its contributing authors have diverse backgrounds and interests and represent a broad spectrum of the dance community. Papers may be peer reviewed on request. Brolga has a B rating on the ERA journals list released by Deakin University, 2008.

Peer review

Peer review of a submission, if requested by the author, can be carried out by members of the advisory board, whose expertise is diverse, and/or by other expert readers appointed by the advisory board and/or the editors. Brolga is, however, eclectic in content and the practice of peer review does not apply to book and performance reviews, transcripts of oral history interviews, shorter communications, items that are simply descriptive of collection materials, such as photographs or costume designs, held in Australian heritage institutions, or articles where the author has not requested it.
