Ausdance SA quarterly update

June 2007

The Ausdance SA Dancers in Schools program extends throughout regional South Australia, as well as catering for metropolitan schools, with over two thousand students participating in workshops last year. Education and Projects Officer, Peta Johnston, recently delivered a dance program as part of the The Bundaleer Forest Weekend, which involved six visits to the Jamestown Community College where Peta conducted workshops with fourteen school students, creating a dance piece that was performed at the festival weekend.

The nature of regional dance initiatives varies greatly and Ausdance SA tailors programs to suit the specific needs of each community. Successful regional dance activities require an advocate and organiser at a local level plus finances to cover travel and accommodation for visiting artists. Dance artists recently presented workshops with the South East network of schools in and around Mount Gambier. Gavin Clarke’s program focused on boys in dance and this year, with assistance from Country Arts SA, Kelly Alexander returns to assist students with their choreography. Rhiannon Davis recently visited both Riverton District High School and Tumby Bay Area School as a part of Youth Week and conducted a short dance intensive at Tumby Bay which resulted in a performance. An ongoing project in Port Pirie assists students preparing dance works for the stage and for the Rave annual dance competition, while the work of dance practitioners such as Angela McMillan has helped to build ongoing relationships with remote Indigenous communities.
