Ausdance NT update—June 2007

Ausdance NT hosted a feast of celebratory dance throughout Dance Month. Free dance classes in all styles were available, as well as an extensive range of master classes, workshops, performances and youth and family events. An Arts Marketing Forum was presented by Top End Arts Marketing and Dance Horizons — check the website for outcomes and feedback.

Congratulations go to Erwin Fennis and Karajayne Handberg who have been nominated for the 2007 Northern Territory Young Achiever Awards.
Darwin welcomes back resident Indigenous dance artist Gary Lang and the Bara Kadal Dance Company, currently preparing for the Dreaming Festival. Another Indigenous dance artist creating great excitement is Rachael Wallis who took a group to The Dreaming Festival in 2006 and is planning to participate in Terrain, Melbourne’s Multicultural Contemporary Dance Festival in November.

Patrick McCloskey, with Artback NT Touring Arts and Desart, continues his work with Indigenous communities. In 2006 Artback NT presented the Warlpiri and Warumungu Dancers at the International Festival of Desert Cultures and People in Algeria. As the first Australian Indigenous dance group to visit Algeria they were met with much enthusiasm.

Ausdance NT farewells (temporarily!) Sarah Calver for twelve months. Sarah has made an invaluable contribution to dance in the territory and we thank her sincerely.

Lizzi Webb,
Ausdance NT Director
