The Australian Dance Council—Ausdance NSW was established in 1986 as the dedicated service provider for dance in the state. Funded principally by the NSW Government through Arts NSW, it is the key support and advocacy body for dance creation, presentation and participation in NSW. Ausdance NSW is committed to raising the profile of dance within the state and to gaining recognition for NSW based companies and artists both nationally and internationally.

Ausdance NSW Project Update

Dance Space Residency Program 2008

Ausdance NSW announces the recipients of the Dance Space Residency Program 2008 at Queen Street Studio.

This new initiative is funded by the City of Sydney’s Cultural Grants and Sponsorships program and is a direct response to the ongoing challenge of access to affordable and appropriate spaces for the development of dance in the Sydney metropolitan area. The residencies will provide selected dance artists with studio time of up to 4 weeks free of charge for creative development, rehearsal of work, work in progress showings, mentorships and the development of their dance practice.

Recipients in 2008 include:

  • Lizzie Thomson—2 week residency, First stage creative development, Mortal Flight
  • Dean Walsh—2 week residency, Final stage development, Back From Front
  • Anton—1 week residency, Exploration and conceptual investigation
  • Nalina Wait—2 week residency, Final stage development, Dual
  • Martin del Amo—2 week residency part-time, Third stage creative development, It’s A Jungle Out There
  • Vicki van Hout—1 week residency, First stage creative development for new dance theatre piece
  • Fiona Malone—3 week residency, First stage creative development, working title Tripod

Indigenous & Regional Dance Strategy

Ausdance NSW recently submitted a proposal to deliver an Indigenous Dance Development program in NSW including an initial pilot program for 2008. Additionally a Regional Dance Strategy is currently being developed for 2009-11.

Regular Programs

Contemporary Dance Class

Ausdance NSW’s regular contemporary dance class program, for local professional dancers, is designed to maintain technical levels of dancers and provide an arena for meeting and exchange. The classes run weekly at the Peter Forsyth Auditorium in Glebe (Sydney NSW) on Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 10am. Guest teachers include Shaun Parker, Dean Walsh, Sol Ulbrich, Lizzie Thompson, Sarah-Jayne Howard, Anton, Carol Dilley, Sue Healey and Tess de Quincey, Paul White and more!

Master Series Program

Master Series is an ongoing program presented by Ausdance NSW, designed to provide professional development opportunities for local professional dancers. Previous guest artists and companies for Master Series program include; Meg Stuart, Fabrik Theatre, Tanja Liedtke, Chunky Move, Dean Walsh, Compagnie Jant-Bi, Kate Champion, Akram Khan, Antje Pfundtner, Sue Healey and The Fondue Set.

Publications

Ausdance NSW publishes a quarterly magazine, DanceNSW, which has a focus on dance activities within NSW and incorporates dance news, events, dance critique and discussion on current issues. In 2008 DanceNSW was released online with the new format proving more interactive than hardcopy. Members of Ausdance NSW receive a yearly subscription to DanceNSW.
