Ausdance ACT

update—May 2008

It’s been a busy time in the office with some changes happening to the way we do things, but firstly…Dance Week! We have a great celebration of dance across the region, with free classes for all ages across a huge range of dance styles and genres, and a visit from the Sydney Dance Company. So Get Out And Dance is the message—how can we resist? Dance Week is the annual celebration of dance, and we make it a special project to work with many of our members to share the joy of dance, including social dances, danzon, belly dance, Bollywood, sequenced and traditional dance, with a big press campaign. Canberra is full of dance, from tiny tappers through to seniors line-dancing, busy dance studios and hip-hoppers, independent dancers and classical ballet stars. If you’ve never tried, or haven’t danced in a while, Dance Week is the best opportunity to give dancing a go and have a great time.

The Dance Week Program brochure is available for download as a PDF (846KB) or you can download the plain list of dance week events (83KB)

Now to some changes

We have farewelled Tim McCann as Communications Officer and welcomed a new Office Manager, Jaimi Kark. Some members may already have made Jaimi’s acquaintance—it’s delightful to have her here in the office with her strong sense of design. The change of staff has happened due to the change in timing for Dance Action. We will now be producing Dance Action every second month, to give us more capacity for new projects, and while we will still set the content, most of the desktop publishing will be handled by an outside contractor.

In May we will be starting a new professional development program in public high schools that leads towards Dance Festival in September. We have been very fortunate to secure the services of Katrina Lazaroff from Adelaide. Katrina will also be the Artistic Producer for Dance Festival, so we are expecting an even better event this year. Dance Festival is underway—watch out!

Neil Roach, Acting Director.
