Ausdance NT

Ausdance NT services the sparsely populated Territory's dance community, and
is a unique branch of Ausdance because of its isolation and ethnic diversity.
Membership is open to anyone interested in dance and is offered on an
annual basis with three financial levels: group, individual and concession.
The branch has about 65 individual and group members and has
a board of six elected annually by the membership. The branch has a
strong
regional network throughout the Northern Territory and conducts regular
outreach programs with local communities in remote areas.
2008 Program
i Moves translations
i Moves translations is Ausdance NT's project for the 2008 Darwin Festival. It is a dance program presenting short and dynamic works by local, independent choreographers and incorporating the themes of translation and collaboration.
This year’s program presents three separate pieces by choreographers Julia Gray, Erwin Fenis, and Tara Robertson, featuring graphic artist Marcus Dixon.
i Moves embodies dance from a variety of genres, showcasing a hybrid of contemporary, Hip hop, Break, and Pacific Islander dances styles, infused with multimedia elements.
An honest, bold, impulsive and beats-fuelled event not to be missed!

Independent Support Fund
In 2007 the Independent Support Fund supported five independent artists from the Northern Territory in pursuing performance and professional development opportunities interstate and overseas. This initiative has been extremely valuable to the unique and diverse professional dance sector of the Northern Territory.
Recipients in 2007 included Julia Gray (Artistic Director of Sunameke, Darwin), Gary Lang (Indigenous dance artist, Director of Baru Kadal, Darwin), Alex Jordan (Independent Dance Artist and Dance Therapist, Darwin), Mariaa Randal (Indigenous Independent Dance Artist, Alice Springs) and Erwin Fenis (Hip Hop and Break Dance Artist and head of the Style Impressions Krew, Darwin).

Regional Dance Project
The Regional Dance Project (RDP) is a youth dance program focused on the East Arnhem Land region. It funded through the Arts NT Regional Arts Fund and supported by local businesses and organizations.
Initiated by Rachael Wallis (Nhulunbuy based Indigenous Dance artist) and Ausdance NT, the Regional Dance Project has and is continuing to deliver dance based activities during school holiday periods for local youth. Incorporating elements of both modern and traditional Indigenous dance the RDP aims to create active, creative and productive outlets for Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth. It also acts as a vehicle of communication and exchange between and between the youth participants and local traditional elders.
Another key component of this project is the facilitation of non-accredited training in dance, teaching, production, project co-ordination and management to delegated project trainees. Assisting Rachael with the delivery of different project activities and participating in ‘work experience’ residencies, these trainees are developing professional skills and experience that will potentially lead to management of specific project areas and other opportunities including employment. The RDP began in July 2007 and is scheduled to finish in Dec 2008, subject to successful application of further funding.
Building Sustainable Dance Business in the Northern Territory
The Indigenous Dance Support Facility Strategic Project
At the end of 2007 Ausdance NT secured an exciting partnership with the Australia Council ATISIA Board as part of the Artists in Work Indigenous Employment in the Arts Strategy to implement the Northern Territory Indigenous Dance Support Facility. The key activity will be to employ an Indigenous Dance Officer within Ausdance NT to focus on and coordinate sustainable training and employment related to Indigenous Dance and establish pathways and supportive partnerships across industries. A centralised data-base of NT Indigenous dance artists/groups and potential employment providers will also be developed as well as guidelines and standards of practice for employers and employees.
